O God, You have taught me from my youth,
And I still declare Your wondrous deeds.
And even when I am old and gray,
O God, do not forsake me,
Until I declare Your strength to this generation,
Your power to all who are to come.
I’m reading the Psalms and came across this wonderful passage. I guess it has always had meaning to me as part of Scripture, but as my hair grays, it speaks to me even louder. I see a new, vibrant generation coming along to replace mine. For good or ill, they will be the leaders of industry and nations. More importantly, they will be leaders of God’s people. It falls to us graybeards to teach them now so that they can teach soundly now and into the future.
When the psalmist says, “I still declare your wondrous deeds,” I think of my youngest days in Sister Kizzah’s class. She would teach those wonderful stories of Noah’s flood, the Egyptian plagues, David and Goliath, Jonah and more. We would actually cheer the victory of God over evil. Let me still cheer Him!
Today, I know He will not forsake me, though my strength is not what it once was. God has a perfect, inviolate plan and will give me the strength I need to be part of it. All glory to Him!
In our Eastern Shore family I see four, maybe five, generations in the assembly. Each has different needs and require differing approaches. May God help me to declare his goodness to them all!
